Aloes are the most striking flowers in the otherwise dry and brown winter veld. Every winter, just as the cold starts to sink in and I start to feel a wistful longing for spring, the aloes put on their captivating show and for a little while my heart is still. In my childhood garden, we had a row of 30 year old aloes running up the driveway and each winter, I knew the school holidays were nearby when the aloes started budding up. For the older me, the aloes are a symbol of hope and home; hope that summer is on the way and home because they remind me of the place I grew up. This year, I specifically sought out these aloes, because I really wanted a photo of them. So, when July arrived, I headed out to a friend’s farm at Burnside, and captured these. The flowers were alive with bees, ants and other bugs, and I spent a moment walking around the flowers, appreciating their beauty.
