This road, especially when driving in the early morning or late afternoon, when that light transforms the world into a scenic wonderland, will always be special to me. When I was a child, soon after my father died, I would spend Saturdays with my Aunt, Uncle and Cousins, out on their farm on the Brondal Road, here in the Lowveld. I would arrive early and leave late, and the light is one of the things that has stayed with me all these years.

Those innocent days were spent running like wild things around the farmland, learning about growing garlic, sitting in my Uncle’s workshop listening to his stories, harvesting strawberries and munching on them as fast as we picked them, and playing until we were exhausted. It was a wonderful time during a dark era of my life, and whenever I drive on this road, I am transported back to those carefree days.
