When the unrelenting dry weather and overwhelming Spring heat finally broke, it brought with it an abundance of rain and a day of spooky, stormy weather.

A full day of lightning, thunder, and rain is almost unheard of in our part of the world, but when we do get spoiled with this weather, I like to spend it romanticizing every moment, from the sound and splash of raindrops to the darker light that envelopes the day.

Between the deluge of water, I went out into the garden to take it all in. And that is when I saw my Nigella plant, packed full of blooms, tucked behind an eggplant. Nigella is one of my favourite flowers. There are so few flowers that have gripped me like this one does, and throughout the growing season, I wait patiently, often thinking it will never bloom. When it does, I don’t have the heart to cut it. Instead, I leave most of the flowers to go to seed so I can collect and plant them again. On the day I took this image, I was floating through the garden, blissfully aware that the moment was fleeting but that the rains would turn my garden back into the lush wonderland that brings me so much peace and happiness.
