There is something divinely feminine about a dahlia, especially the Cafe Au Lait Dahlia, with its gentle pink and cream petals. The plant buds up slowly, and the flowers burst open, seemingly overnight, growing in size as each day passes. Dahlias originate from Mexico, and they thrive in our similar climate, although here in the Lowveld they can struggle with the summer rain, which makes the tubers prone to rot. It is a perennial bloom. New shoots appear at the end of winter in warm areas, and by December at the latest, they have bouquets of blooms, bunched at the end of each stem. The plants flower until the start of winter, and in cold, frost areas, the tubers need to be lifted in order to be preserved.
